Abraham Lincoln practiced law for 25 years, appearing in courthouses throughout Illinois. He represented corporations such as the Illinois Central Railroad in major commercial suits and was one of the state's leading lawyers. But he rarely took a deposition, answered interrogatories, or filed a motion to compel. Discovery in those days came mostly from the witness stand.
